2-in-1 Silky Crayons with Stamps: Design, Washability and Customization

By Lucy Lu, Founder of YIHUA ·

YIHUA’s 2-in-1 silky crayon combines a water-based, twist-up crayon with a built-in stamp. This development story explains the 17 mm barrel design, mechanism revisions, cleaning methods and custom set options.

Developing this product involved more than adding a stamp to an existing crayon. We revised the twist-up mechanism four times and the cap twice to improve how the components worked together.

Why We Developed a Larger-Barrel Silky Crayon

Among the silky crayons we encountered while reviewing products, many had outer barrel diameters of approximately 12–13 mm. We wanted to offer more drawing material while adding activities beyond coloring.

Our design uses a 17 mm outer barrel diameter. This measurement refers to the plastic barrel, not the crayon core. The development goal was to increase the amount of drawing material and add a stamp while keeping the additional cost manageable.

The wider barrel also offers space for decoration. UV transfer stickers can be supplied so children can personalize their crayons. A coordinated set can combine drawing, stamping and DIY decoration around the same theme.

What Four Revisions to the Twist-Up Mechanism Taught Us

A twist-up crayon should extend smoothly, retract properly and remain connected to its holder. During development, some color versions were difficult to turn. Others turned without advancing the core, extended but would not retract, or developed a separation between the core and its holder.

One successful color sample did not mean that every other color would behave the same way. We had to adjust both the plastic components and the colored crayon material. Differences in plastic-part shrinkage and the way each core interacted with the mechanism affected fit and movement.

This required coordinated work across mold adjustment, injection-molding settings and formulation development. We revised the twist-up mechanism four times.

For buyers, the practical lesson is to evaluate every color in a proposed set. Check extension, retraction, turning resistance and whether the core remains connected during normal operation.

Why the Stamp and Cap Needed Their Own Development Work

Adding a built-in stamp introduces more components and more points where fit matters. The drawing mechanism, stamp assembly and protective caps have different functions. Different plastic materials are needed for different parts, and their behavior must be considered together during assembly.

Our early cap fit was too tight, making it difficult for children to remove. We revised the cap twice to improve opening ease.

Photographs cannot show how much effort it takes to remove a cap or turn the mechanism. When reviewing samples, buyers should try these actions themselves.

Water-Based Drawing and a Ready-to-Use Stamp

The silky crayon uses a water-based formulation. The washable stamp uses food-additive-grade colorants. This grade describes an ingredient used in the ink; it does not mean the finished product is edible.

In our internal paper-use checks, both crayon marks and stamp impressions felt dry and non-sticky after approximately 10 seconds. Drying time can vary with paper, the amount applied and environmental conditions.

The stamp contains its own ink and needs no separate ink pad. In our continuous stamping test, it produced more than 1,000 impressions without refilling. Actual use varies with stamping pressure, storage and how often the stamp is left uncapped. Replace the cap after use. Optional refill ink can also be discussed when planning a set.

How to Clean Marks from Different Surfaces

Our practical cleaning checks covered several everyday surfaces. The cleaning method depends on the material.

SurfaceCleaning method used
Tabletops and wooden flooringWipe with a damp cloth or wet wipe
Ceramic and glassRinse with water
ClothingHand-wash with laundry detergent
PaperDrawing and stamp marks are not intended to wash out

Surface finishes and fabrics differ. Before making packaging claims for a particular use, test samples on the intended materials. Check both crayon marks and stamp impressions using the cleaning instructions you plan to provide.

Customization Ideas for Children’s Art Brands

  • Drawing and stamping sets: Coordinate colors and stamp designs around one theme.
  • DIY decoration kits: Include UV transfer stickers so children can personalize the barrel.
  • Gift-card activity sets: Combine crayons with cards that children can color, stamp and add a message to.
  • Branded retail sets: Develop barrel artwork and packaging for the brand’s identity and sales channel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 2-in-1 silky crayon with a stamp?

It combines a twist-up silky crayon and a built-in stamp in one product. Children can draw and add stamped designs without a separate stamp and ink pad.

Does the stamp need an ink pad?

No. It contains ink and is ready to use after removing the cap. Replace the cap after stamping.

Is 17 mm the core diameter?

No. It is the outer diameter of the plastic barrel.

Are the crayons and stamps washable?

They are designed for easy cleaning. In our practical checks, damp wiping worked on tabletops and wooden flooring, water rinsing worked on ceramic and glass, and hand-washing with laundry detergent worked on clothing. Paper marks are not intended to wash out.

What should buyers check before approving a custom set?

Check every color’s drawing performance, extension and retraction, cap removal, stamp impressions and cleaning on the intended surfaces. Review decoration and packaging alongside the samples.
